Pleasure Beach

Labadi Beach. Ghana.

Labadi beach in Ghana is also known as pleasure beach but it was more like Piccadilly Circus! And you can see why. We found ourselves down here one friday at sunset and man, what a sight. People riding horses, chatting, playing, dancing, living and loving. We were actually in Ghana shooting a story on fantasy coffins for a gallery show, most people call the pieces fantasy coffins, but they are locally called Abeduu Adekai, which means "proverb boxes” and they usually reflect the life, dreams, passions and status of the dead. We saw boat shaped coffins, shoe shaped coffins even Mercedes Benz shaped ones! Although so foreign to us, it seemed pretty cool that the custom was to send the person off, delivering them to a new beginning (afterlife is a strong belief there) in style! As we arrived on the beach, it seemed like absolutely everyone in Accra was there! Like us, it seemed as though they had just knocked off work and headed down to the ocean to cool off, get into the weekend and celebrate life. It was a beautiful thing to see. What a pleasure it was to be there!
